Instructor, Applied Technologies (12-month position)

Duties & Responsibilities

General Function

Sampson Community College is seeking a skilled and experienced Electrical or HVAC Instructor to join our team. This position is open to qualified professionals in either the electrical or HVAC field who are enthusiastic about educating and training the next generation of skilled workers. The ideal candidate will not only have industry expertise but also be committed to maintaining a safe learning environment, staying current with industry advancements, and continuously developing new skills to enhance student learning opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Teach and mentor students in either electrical or HVAC theory, safety, and practical applications.
  • Develop and deliver lesson plans aligned with industry standards.
  • Provide hands-on training in:
    • Electrical: Wiring, troubleshooting, and maintenance across residential, commercial, and industrial control applications.
    • HVAC: Installation, diagnostics, repair, and maintenance of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, including system design and geothermal heat pump applications.
  • Ensure a safe and organized working environment in both classroom and lab settings, and industry best practices.
  • Implement and enforce all safety procedures to minimize risks and promote student awareness of proper safety protocols and tools.
  • Utilize a Learning Management System (LMS) to manage course content, assignments, and student engagement in hybrid or blended learning environments.
  • Deliver instruction in both in-person and online formats to accommodate diverse learning needs.
  • Evaluate student progress through assignments, exams, and hands-on assessments.
  • Stay up to date with changes to electrical and mechanical codes and integrate updates into coursework.
  • Continuously learn new technology and incorporate emerging industry advancements into instruction.
  • Attend professional training sessions, workshops, and certification courses to expand instructional capabilities and offer new training opportunities to students.
  • Participate in off-campus events to promote and support student recruitment and retention.
  • Conduct on-site work-based learning visits to engage with students and industry partners.
  • Build and maintain connections with industry professionals to enhance student opportunities for internships, apprenticeships, and employment.
  • Willingness to stay up to date with code changes and new industry standards.
  • Eagerness to learn new technology and attend training to expand student certification opportunities.
  • Willingness to attend off-campus events and connect with industry partners.
  • May include day or evenings hours.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Required Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in the electrical or HVAC industry.
  • Active Electrical contractors License or HVAC contractor’s License preferred, or a willingness to obtain a license.
  • Universal EPA 608 Certification (required for HVAC candidates).
  • Experience with residential, commercial, and industrial electrical control systems (for electrical candidates).
  • Proficient in load calculations and duct design, troubleshooting, repairing, maintaining, and installing residential and light commercial HVAC systems, including geothermal heat pumps.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills.
  • Ability to work with students of diverse backgrounds and skill levels.
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Diploma or associate degree in a related field.
  • Experience using an LMS platform (such as Blackboard, Canvas, Moodle, or similar) for online, hybrid, or blended courses.
  • Teaching or training experience.
